Welcome to Beech Class
Our new topic for the final half term in Year 1 is 'Paws, Claws and Whiskers'. We started our topic with a fantastic visit to Hasty's Adventure Farm. We learnt about different types of farmyard animals, fed them and found out lots of new facts. We even got to play in the giant sandpit.
Our topic this half term was 'Enchanted Woodland'. For our 'Sparkling Start' we went for a walk in the forest and looked for suitable homes for woodland creatures. We then used materials from the forest to create our own home for a woodland creature.
In English we focused on the story of Hansel and Gretel. We have developed our understanding of adjectives and have used these to describe the characters in Hansel and Gretel. We thought about how the characters felt in the story and used drama to explore these when retelling the story. Following this, we created our own character for Hansel and Gretel to meet and changed the ending of the story.
In Maths we have been learning abut odd and even number. We have learnt that odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8. We have explored doubling and halving numbers and started to learnt about fractions.
In Science we enjoyed learning about plants. We went for a walk outside and looked at the leaves and how they change over time. We noticed that the leaves go from green to brown when they die. We also learnt about common wild and garden flowers and created our own fact files. We have developed our knowledge of plants further by learning about the different parts of the plant and what each part does.
This half term we have worked as a class to research the historical figure Florence Nightingale. We found out lots of interesting facts about Florence Nightingale and discovered that she was awarded the Royal Red Cross.
We have really enjoyed our 'Superheroes' topic this term. To launch this amazing topic, we had a Superhero day and came to school dressed in Superhero outfits. We were visited by some real life superheroes who told us all about their jobs and what they do. We even got to go inside the fire engine.
In Maths we have been developing both our number bonds and our addition and subtraction skills. We have also learnt about multiplication.
In Science we had fun exploring different materials. We learnt about the different properties materials have, investigated whether materials are waterproof or not and learnt about transparent and opaque materials. For Science week we took part in a 'Silly Science' workshop.
Our topic this half term has been 'Bright Lights, Big City'. In this topic we learnt about the Queen and the capital city of London itself. To start the topic we had a tea party for the Queen and dressed in our best clothes. We then used IPads to research the Queen and find facts about London. As part of this topic we also learnt about the historical event of The Great Fire of London. We enjoyed making paper houses and burning these in the forest to see how the fire spread back in 1666. We also had the opportunity to make bread.
We took part in our class assembly.
We have continued to have lots of fun with our ‘Memory Box’ topic. We have been talking about our favourite memories, the differences between ourselves now and when we were babies and researching old toys and comparing them to new toys. We have enjoyed using the IPads and information books to help us to write our own non-fiction text about an old toy. We have been sorting fiction and non fiction texts. We can identify lots of different features of non fiction texts and have enjoyed looking for these in a selection of books.
We also learnt about the Gunpowder plot and why it was unsuccessful. The children had fun taking part in role play and researching facts.
We have been working on developing our subtraction skills this term. We know how to use objects, pictorial representations, number lines and 100 squares to take away!
We have also been learning how to tell the time. We have written the correct times to match clock faces, drawn clock faces and even solved some tricky problems.
Beech class have had a great first few weeks and have all settled in well. This term's topic is Memory Box which began by having a year one picnic. We joined Oak class and Cherry class outside and listened to stories and songs while eating our snack. We have shared memories with each other and look forward to finding about the rest of the topic very soon.
In English we have been practising lots of writing skills. We wrote recounts using the past tense and remembered to use our phonics skills as well as including adverbials of time like first, then and last. We are now learning about writing a diary - not about ourselves, but pretending to be Goldilocks!
In Maths we have been making patterns using resources in the classroom such as numicon, number cards and multi-link cubes. The next step was to complete number sequences remembering how to work out one more and one less.
Don't forget that our PE day is on Monday (no earrings please!) and Forest School is on Tuesday.
